Statement regarding the Consecration of The Revd Prebendary Will Hazlewood

We express our gratitude to the Archbishop of Canterbury for making arrangements (1) for Prebendary Will Hazlewood’s consecration to the episcopate at Lambeth Palace Chapel on 15 July which give full expression to the Five Guiding Principles, as enshrined in the House of Bishops’ Declaration on the Ministry of Bishops and Priests (2).

For slightly over twenty-five years, in the period since the admission of women into the priesthood by the Church of England, provision has been made for traditional Catholic candidates for the priesthood to be ordained by bishops with whom they are in full sacramental communion.

It is fitting that this well-established practice is being adopted as the norm for the consecration of traditional Catholic bishops, now that women have been admitted into the episcopate by the Church of England.

At the moment of consecration all candidates must experience the sacramental assurance and joy of full communion with the bishops who ordain them. In that spirit, we offer our prayers for the ministries of Ruth Bushyager and Hugh Nelson, whose consecrations will take place in Lambeth Palace Chapel earlier in the day on 15 July (3).

 

 

 

 

(1) The Bishop of Richborough will act as the Archbishop’s delegate as chief consecrator, and the Bishops of Ebbsfleet and of Fulham will act as co-consecrators. All three bishops serve on The Society’s Council of Bishops, as will the Bishop of Lewes.

(3) Will Hazlewood is to be the Bishop of Lewes in the Diocese of Chichester, Ruth Bushyager is to be the Bishop of Horsham in the Diocese of Chichester and Hugh Nelson is to be the Bishop of St Germans in the Diocese of Truro.

The Re-opening of Churches for Private Prayer

Forward in Faith warmly welcomes the re-opening of churches for private prayer from 15 June. It has been a long period of exile for the faithful from their churches, including the entirety of Eastertide, and so this announcement marks a positive first step towards the resumption of the sacramental life, including public celebration of the Mass and reception of holy communion in churches. We are grateful to the Government for recognising in its announcement the benefits of praying in church; benefits which are not always available at home.

 

We pray that Christians may find spiritual solace and healing at this time of crisis through prayer and devotion in our country's familiar sacred spaces. We encourage all Christians to mark this year's Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is on 19 June, with the private recitation of prayers from this specially produced booklet either in church or at home, as circumstances allow. 

 

We are mindful that not all churches will be able to open immediately - for a variety of reasons - and ask that patience and understanding are paramount in those cases. Before visiting those churches which are able to open for private prayer, we urge all individuals to consult public health guidance - particularly those shielding at this time - and to act in strict accordance with its stipulations. 



 



Fr Beau Brandie RIP

The trustees of Forward in Faith are greatly saddened to learn of the death, yesterday evening, of Fr Beau Brandie SSC. 

 

Fr Beau was a leading figure in the Anglo-Catholic movement over recent decades and in that period served on the Forward in Faith Council with wisdom and good humour, most recently acting as the Area Dean for Scotland. He was a loyal and kind priest who was a source of encouragement in the Faith for many.

 

A full obituary will appear in New Directions in due course. 

 

May Fr Beau rest in peace.
